About Course

Overview This qualification develops learners’ understanding of a wide range of topics relevant to early childhood development theories. The focus is on understanding developmental patterns and sequences in children’s development and how context impacts on children’s progress. Learners engage with foundational theories and models that have shaped understanding of child development alongside contemporary theory exploring emerging trends in early childhood education. Topics include play-based learning and cognitive milestones, language and communication, personal, social and emotional development, inclusive relationships, and how to create environments that support learning and individual children’s needs.

  • Hours: 600 Guided Learning Hours
  • Total Qualification Time: 1200 hours

Assessment All units are internally assessed by the centre and externally verified by OTHM. Assessment is via written assignments only. No exams.

Requirements/Instructions

  • Learners must attend all scheduled sessions or engage fully with online learning materials
  • All assignments must be submitted by the deadlines provided
  • Learners must have access to a computer or device with internet connection
  • Academic integrity must be maintained at all times; learners should be aware of OTHM’s guidance on AI use in assessments
  • Delivery centres must have academic staff with a degree or equivalent in Early Years, Psychology or a health-related field and GCSEs (A–C) in Maths and English

Progression and Career Outcomes Progression to the OTHM Level 5 Diploma in Early Childhood Education or direct entry to Year 2 of a UK Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Studies, Education or Psychology. Career opportunities include early years practitioner, room leader in a nursery setting, key person in a childcare setting, and family support worker.
